Fort Amanda - Below the Surface (Project Intro)

In October 1812, Robert Pogue and his companmy of mounted Kentucky volunteers from norther Kentucky, began construction of a post on the west bank of the Auglaize River, Pogue named for his 11 year-old daughter, Hannah Amanda Pogue.

Other than the ground penetrating radar scans we did in 2013, no physical archaeology has even been performed within the grassed area (state property).  Thats OK because we have a good idea of what the fort looked like physically, (btw there were 5 blockhouses, not 4), what we want to know is what's beneath the surface in the field adjacent to the grassy area.  That's where clues as to what life was like at the fort 211 years ago.

This year permisson was obtained from David Kreigel, ownere of the farmed area west of the monument to do some premiliary test digs.  Heading up the projec is a team led by Greg Shipley of Logan County, Oh.  If you're on Facaebook, check out Greg's page and the look at the work his team has been doing at Fort Loramie for the past 10 years.

Work began Nov. 3 and 4, 2023 with more period artifacts being found in two days than I did in years.  To date over 500 artifacts of various kinds, lead, glass, buttons have been uncovered.  I will be posting updates of the teams progress along with personal notes and comments.  What I can say at this point is one of the items found on Nov. 4 left me dumbfounded.  Tune in Sunday Nov. 19 to see the team's progress to date.
